NuNamel Silver Diamine Flouride (SDF) FAQs

NuNamel SDF is part of NuSmile’s preventive product line, alongside NuNamel 5% Sodium Fluoride Varnish. This clear 38% silver diamine fluoride (SDF) solution treats dental hypersensitivity by occluding dentinal tubules, with silver providing antimicrobial benefits and fluoride aiding remineralization.

Treatment of dentinal hypersensitivity. For use in adults over the age of 21.

NuNamel SDF should not be used in patients with silver allergies, oral ulcers, canker sores, mucositis, or advanced periodontal disease, as the ammonia content may cause irritation. It is also unsuitable for severe decay with pulpal involvement, as it is not a substitute for restorative treatment.

According to the AAPD, SDF is a minimally invasive treatment used to arrest caries, prevent further decay, and manage dentin hypersensitivity. It can help delay or reduce the need for more extensive procedures and may be applied by trained allied dental personnel under supervision. The AAPD also supports ongoing research to further evaluate its effectiveness and long-term impact. For more details, refer to the AAPD Policy on SDF here.

The maximum recommended amount is 1 drop per 22.05 lbs (10 kg) of body weight per visit.

Yes, applying fluoride varnish after SDF treatment is recommended as it helps provide extra protection by promoting remineralization and balancing the pH of the oral environment.

Keep NuNamel SDF in its original container in a cool, dark location. Re-cap immediately after use to prevent accidental staining and to preserve its effectiveness.

No, NuNamel SDF does not come with an applicator brush. However, it can be used with your current micro-brush applicator or any micro-brush of your choice.
